تفسير
Definition: Tafsir is the exegesis of the Qur’an.
Although most commentary for the Qur’an comes directly from within the Qur’an
itself, there are other forms of explanation given by intelligent pious Muslims
(“The Qur’an and Qur’anic Interpretation”). These authors are called
mufassirūn, and their jobs are to explain meanings and rulings to other Muslims
(“What is Tafsir”).
Importance: Many people think that the Qur’an is a complicated book
that is inaccessible to the public. The
tafsir is a way for the messages of the Qur’an to be explained or interpreted so
that the messages of Allah can be shared (“What is Tafsir”). This is notable
because it shows the need that different religions had for a type of further
explanation of the sacred texts. Everyday people benefited from these exegeses
because it gave the Word a context that could be more fully lived out.
