Definition: If
the First Crusade had a slogan, this would be it. Deus vult is the idea that
“God wills it,” referencing the Crusade. Pope Urban II called for a holy war
for the recapture of Jerusalem at Clermont on November 27, 1095. After he appealed
to those who were present, it is said that the audience erupted into a chant of
“Deus vult” in unison (Peters 22).
Importance: This
phrase became the cry of the people in times of good fortune, and it acted as
motivation in times of defeat. This idea that it is God’s will for the
Christians to recapture Jerusalem validates the malicious struggles of warfare
for the crusaders. While starting conflicts may be against the moral standards
for a good Christian, it is certainly easier to accept this fate when doing it
in the name of God.
